With the loss to the Pirates, the Yankees miss the chance to secure first place

The Yankees have secured the AL East title and are closing in on home field advantage through the ALCS.

Despite losing to the Pirates 4-2 in the Bronx on Friday night, Jazz Chisholm Jr. revealed that the team has high expectations heading into October.

“This was their goal all season, to get to the World Series, not just the playoffs,” Chisholm said. “This is just a stop and I feel deep in the soul of everyone in this clubhouse, we don’t believe our stop is now. We won’t give up until we get this ring.”

They’re well-positioned to win as Gerrit Cole has been pitching like an ace lately and Friday’s starter Carlos Rodon also looks like a weapon for the postseason.

Rodon’s turnaround after last season’s disaster was one of the keys to the Yankees putting 2023 behind them, and he was solid again against the Pirates.

The left-hander didn’t allow a run until Nick Gonzalez and Bryan Reynolds hit back-to-back home runs to open the sixth, erasing the Yankees’ 2-0 lead that had been achieved by a two-run Chisholm single in the fifth.

With the game tied in the eighth, Tommy Kahnle gave up a two-run home run to Reynolds and the Yankees were unable to recover.

However, their most important task for next week is to prepare as best as possible for the ALDS, with Cole pitching for Game 1 and Rodon possibly pitching for Game 2.

Rodon ended last year in disarray, wondering if he could survive in New York.

He has been reliable all year and now wants more.

“It’s going to be really fun to start here in the Bronx,” Rodon said of the postseason. “It will be electric. … We’re heading into the postseason. This is a lot different than last year.”

The Yankees are still a bit of a work in progress, however, as Jason Dominguez started again in left field, resting Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Austin Wells and Anthony Rizzo.

The night got off to a promising start when Rodon – who marked a career high with his 32nd start of the year – bailed out in the first game and held the Pirates scoreless until the fifth period.

Rodon was aided by two fantastic running catches on deep fly balls to center by Trent Grisham, both off the bat of Nick Yorke, and by Jose Trevino, who eliminated two would-be base stealers.

After Chisholm gave the Yankees the lead in the fifth, the Yankees loaded the bases later in the inning, but Alex Verdugo jumped to center and Anthony Volpe’s rocket went straight to Billy Cook in center to tie the game with two runs.

And then Rodon faltered in the sixth and Kahnle two innings later.

But it didn’t shake their confidence as the playoffs were around the corner and they had their first World Series title since 2009 on their minds.

“That’s what I’ve heard since I’ve been here and that’s what I feel,” said Chisholm, who has provided a spark since arriving from Miami before the trade deadline.

“I’m really excited to go to war with these guys because I know we have the best talent in the league and I feel like we have the best teamwork and togetherness. I have a feeling we’re going to be unstoppable.”

Another win or loss against Cleveland would give the Yankees home-field advantage at least through the ALCS, which would only make Chisholm’s pursuit easier.
