Wisconsin quarterback Tyler Van Dyke injured in devastating loss to Alabama

Wisconsin quarterback Tyler Van Dyke sustained a right knee injury early in the first quarter of their 42-10 loss to No. 4 Alabama on Saturday.

Van Dyke was injured as he ran toward the right sideline on the first drive of the game. He was hit as he left the field, but the injury appeared to have occurred as he planted his right leg just before contact.

Van Dyke was visibly upset as he was carted back to the locker room. Wisconsin announced at halftime that he would miss the rest of the game.

The Miami transfer is in his first year in Madison and started the first three games of the season for the Badgers. Van Dyke is playing his fifth season of college football after spending four years with the Hurricanes. His best season was 2021, when he threw for 25 TDs and over 2,900 yards in just 10 games. Last season, he played 11 games but threw 12 interceptions and threw for 2,703 yards.

Van Dyke was replaced by Braedyn Locke. The redshirt sophomore started three games for the Badgers last season and completed 50% of his passes for 777 yards and five touchdowns with one interception.

Wisconsin converted its first drive into a field goal and did not score another touchdown until the second half. In the meantime, Alabama scored four touchdowns and decided the game before halftime.

Jalen Milroe ran for two touchdowns and completed 12 of 17 passes for 196 yards and three touchdowns. One of those touchdowns was another touchdown for 17-year-old wide receiver Ryan Williams.

Alabama also averaged over five yards per carry against a Wisconsin defense that couldn’t hold up, especially against an offense that was struggling.

Locke finished the game 13 of 26 passing for 125 yards and a touchdown pass to Will Pauling. Alabama converted eight of its 14 third-down attempts, while Wisconsin managed just 3 of 14 and lost two fumbles.
