Wind warning for Charlotte counties: What you need to know

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – A wind advisory was in effect throughout the Charlotte area Monday as a low pressure system moved through, bringing heavy rain and gusty winds.

The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for the following counties in the Charlotte metropolitan area on Monday, September 16:

  • Anson
  • Cabarrus
  • Chester (South Carolina)
  • Gaston
  • Mecklenburg
  • Richmond
  • rowan
  • Stanly
  • union
  • York (South Carolina)

Wind gusts between 35 and 45 miles per hour were expected in the affected counties Monday evening into early Tuesday morning. The gusty winds could blow over unsecured objects and down tree limbs.

Due to the strong winds, there were concerns that there might be power outages during the night from Monday to Sunday.

The wind warnings were scheduled to expire at 2 a.m. on Tuesday, September 17.

Due to excessive rainfall, flood warnings were also issued for the region during the night from Monday to Tuesday.

The National Weather Service issued a flood warning for Anson, Cabarrus, Gaston, Mecklenburg, Richmond, Stanly and Union counties in North Carolina on Monday. Flood warnings also applied to Lancaster and York counties in South Carolina.

Rainfall amounts between 2 and 4 inches were expected in the Charlotte metro area on Monday and Tuesday. Locally, higher amounts, “over 6 to 7 inches,” were possible throughout the region, officials said.

On Monday, potential Tropical Cyclone Eight moved inland, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to the Carolinas, according to WBTV meteorologists. The heaviest rain and wind gusts were expected Monday night and continued into early Tuesday morning.

As the wet weather continues, excessive rainfall could flood rivers, creeks, streams and “other low-lying and flood-prone areas,” the NWS said. Flash flooding is possible throughout the region.

The flood warning was set to expire at 8 a.m. Tuesday for Anson, Richmond and Stanly counties. For all other counties listed above, the warning was in effect “until Tuesday morning.”
