Wilmington man dies after two-vehicle crash near Middleton

According to Delaware State Police, an 83-year-old man died Saturday after a two-vehicle crash in Middletown.

According to police, a 66-year-old man was driving a Ford Explorer in the right lane on Summit Bridge Road northbound near the intersection with Red Lion Road in Middletown on Saturday. A Ford Edge traveling southbound attempted to turn left onto Red Lion Road and enter the Explorer’s path. The Explorer struck the passenger side of the Edge.

The Edge’s driver, a 66-year-old man, was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. One of the Edge’s four passengers, an 83-year-old Wilmington man who is being withheld pending family notification, was taken to an area hospital where he later died. Another Edge passenger, a 61-year-old woman, was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries. The two remaining Edge passengers, a 79-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man, were taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Explorer, a 25-year-old man from St. Louis, Missouri, and a passenger, a 29-year-old woman from North Brunswick, New Jersey, were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

The road was closed for about five hours to clear the scene and conduct the investigation. The Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit is still investigating the accident, police said Sunday afternoon.
