Will Smith took home a trophy at the 2024 Emmys – but it’s not the Will Smith you’re thinking of.

Smith, an English comedian and screenwriter, won the award for outstanding screenplay for a drama series for Apple TV+’s Slow horsesand took the opportunity to joke about people who might be confused by his name.

“First of all, relax,” Smith said. “Despite my name, I come in peace.”

For those living behind the moon, this was a years later reference to the other Will Smith’s incident at the 2022 Academy Awards, where the Men in Black Star slapped Chris Rock in the middle of the ceremony after the comedian made jokes about Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head. This unexpected appearance brought the other Smith will be banned from the Oscars for 10 years. (There’s no word on whether the other Will Smith will be welcome at the Emmys, though.)

Smith used the remaining time to thank his employees and his family for their support. He suggested Stand out, Mr and Mrs Smith, The Crownand two episodes of Shogun to take home the award.

In the Emmys press room, Smith explained his reasoning for making the reference to his namesake. “I thought it would be best to acknowledge that,” he said. “I know that name scares a lot of people.”

Smith won consecutive Emmys for outstanding comedy series in 2015 and 2016 as part of the writing team for VeepHe is also nominated for Best Drama Series this year for Slow horses.

Slow horses also received nominations for Gary Oldman for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, Jack Lowden for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, and Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series. The series also received Creative Arts Emmy nominations for Jonathan Pryce for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series, Outstanding Cast in a Drama Series, Outstanding Cinematography Editing for a Drama Series, and Outstanding Music Composition for a Series.
