The royal, who will marry Durek on August 31, is certainly familiar with sparklers

Princess Märtha Louise of Norway keeps an eye on her tiara as her wedding anniversary on August 31st approaches.

The daughter of King Harald and Queen Sonja will marry shaman Durek Verrett at the Hotel Union in Geiranger, Norway, sparking speculation about whether or not she will wear a tiara.

So far, Princess Märtha Louise’s bridal style is a complete secret, apart from a few pieces of information from Hello! Magazine, which is exclusively covering the wedding (and not without controversy). The magazine said its upcoming coverage will include the bride’s arrival in her “stunning wedding dress,” but there was no mention of a headpiece – so royal watchers will have to look to the past for possible clues about her look.

Princess Märtha Louise’s wedding to Durek, a 6th generation American “shaman” whose website points to a celebrity clientele, will be her second marriage, and she wore a tiara at her first wedding. At her wedding to author and playwright Ari Behn on May 24, 2002, Märtha Louise shimmered in a replica of Queen Maud’s pearl tiara as the two exchanged wedding vows in Trondheim, Norway.

According to The Court Jeweller, the original diamond and pearl tiara had been in the family for generations until it was shockingly stolen in 1995 and sent to Garrard’s in London for cleaning. The sparkle was never recovered and the luxury jeweller recreated the tiara for the Norwegian royals that Märtha Louise wore 22 years ago.

Märtha Louise, 52, and Behn had daughters such as Maud Angelica, 21, Leah Isadora, 19, and Emma Tallulah, 15. They separated in 2016. Their divorce was finalized the following year and in 2019 Behn committed suicide at the age of 47. After the death of her ex, Märtha Louise spoke openly about her depression.

When it comes to her wedding, the princess bride could take a leaf out of her mother Queen Sonja’s book. On August 29, 1968, Sonja Haraldsen wore white flowers in her hair and a veil when she married Crown Prince Harald, the future King of Norway, Royal Central reported.

Over the years, Princess Märtha Louise has worn several other tiaras from the royal family’s vault on special occasions. Most recently, Märtha Louise wore the tiara gifted to King Olav at the gala dinner for her niece, Princess Ingrid Alexandra (who is in direct line of succession to Crown Prince Haakon) at the Royal Palace in Oslo in June 2022.

She attended the event with Durek, just days after the two announced their engagement and just over three years after they went public with their relationship in May 2019.

Princess Märtha Louise received the King Olav Tiara as a gift for her 18th birthday from her grandfather, King Olav, as reported by The Court Jeweller, and the fan blog described it as her “primary tiara.” Another tiara she wears on a regular basis is the Norwegian Amethyst Parure Tiara, which she wore at the royal wedding of Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden in 2010 and most recently at the state banquet in Oslo in honor of the visit of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands in 2021.

Going even further back in her history as a tiara wearer, Märtha Louise wore the Maltese Cross bandeau during Sweden’s state visit to Norway in 1993. Queen Sonja, 87, also wore the adjustable headpiece in a more daring way – with crosses attached to the front.

Which tiara Princess Märtha Louise will wear when she marries this weekend will likely depend on her personal preferences. She gave up her royal role in November 2022. The Norwegian royal family said at the time that the decision was made so that she could freely pursue other interests without the restrictions of belonging to the crown. The court stated that the queen would retain her title as princess and would always be welcome at family celebrations.

In conversation with Hello! Before the wedding, Märtha Louise revealed in a joint interview with her future husband how meeting Durek changed everything when it came to walking down the aisle again.
