    Will Jason Benetti continue to call Detroit Tigers games? What we know

    Your regional sports network should be like referees; The less you know about them, the better job they are likely to do.

    Unfortunately for Detroit sports fans (and fans of many other teams across the country) the exact opposite has been true when it comes to Bally Sports.

    In recent years, Bally Sports, a subsidiary of Diamond Sports Group, has become a staple in the sports conversation. Diamond has been in an ongoing bankruptcy dispute for several years, which has resulted in several teams, particularly in the MLB, regaining their media rights.

    Additionally, the Tigers were off the air for thousands of people in Michigan for several months this year due to Bally Sports Detroit being unavailable to Xfinity customers due to ongoing negotiations over which package Bally would be included in. It was finally resolved in August, but baseball, basketball and hockey fans are no strangers to disruptions related to Bally Sports and their favorite teams.

    On Wednesday, news broke that Tigers fans will likely have to change their viewing habits yet again. According to Evan Drellich of The Athletic, Diamond said in a court hearing that they have terminated their contracts with the Tigers and Tampa Bay Rays, meaning those teams will have to renegotiate a new contract or find a new home for their transfers.

    But what does this mean for Detroit’s new favorite announcer, Jason Benetti? As far as we can tell, nothing should change on this front. The Tigers broadcasters should not be affected as they are employees of the team and not Bally Sports Detroit.

    The Tigers lured Benetti away from his hometown Chicago White Sox last offseason and signed him to a multi-year contract to replace Matt Shepard. Benetti worked with several different partners that year, including, as would continue to be the case, Craig Monroe (who stopped working after June 9 due to an off-field investigation), Andy Dirks, Dan Petry, Kirk Gibson and others This is the case wherever the Tigers broadcast ends.

    Benetti also works for Fox Sports, hosting college basketball and football games in addition to Tigers games throughout the year.

    Detroit sports fans may not be entirely satisfied with Bally Sports, at least not yet. The Red Wings and Pistons previously signed a new agreement with Diamond to retain their broadcasts on Bally Sports Detroit for the 2024-25 season.
