For some reason, Disney is refusing to release an official version of the D23 Thunderbolts trailer after it leaked. But you can watch the pirated version and see new costumes, new hairstyles, and a first look at Sentry to boot.

I’m really excited for this movie, but I’m also pretty skeptical about how it will fare outside of the hardcore MCU audience, which includes me and most people who… want to watch a leaked D23 trailer.

At its core, the concept is a little similar to Marvel’s Suicide Squad. A concept that has resulted in a critically panned film for DC, a good but poorly-received sequel, and a video game that just lost Warner Bros. $200 million. Granted, I’m absolutely convinced that the MCU’s version will be better, but the basic concept remains a hard sell to a wider audience. A collection of villains and antiheroes who, with few exceptions, are often the third or fourth major character in their own films or series. Let’s go through them.

Bucky Barnes – Yes, he’s clearly the biggest “name” here, although I’m not sure he’s leading the team, as reports say Yelena is set to take over. Of course, Bucky is a cool character, but this will be the first time he’s completely on his own (aside from his recovery in Wakanda) without one of two Captain Americas by his side.

Yelena, Red Guardian, Breeder – Here you have selected three Characters from Black Widow. I love Florence Pugh and think she’s the right choice to play the lead in a movie like this. But leaning heavily on these characters, including a villain that almost everyone hated, even though Black Widow is far from one of the best MCU movies and the seventh worst movie of all. That seems like a risk.

Again, Taskmaster – I don’t know what to say about the decision to bring in Taskmaster, to bring back the much-maligned villain from Black Widow, as she dramatic Changes compared to the comic, one of them is that they Is one she is, but that’s not a problem compared to how the entire concept of the character has been changed. Now she also has a worse costume that is currently being dissected on the internet.

Spirit -I really enjoyed Ghost in the trailer and she seems to be the only one with really cool powers. I wonder how many non-core fans even know which movie Ghost is from. Do you know? The answer is Ant-Man and the Wasp, the middle part of the Ant-Man trilogy, because for some reason we got an Ant-Man trilogy. Ant-Man and the Wasp is just outside the 10 lowest-grossing MCU movies at number 11.

US agent – Here we have a Disney Plus-only character who had a memorable role in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but he wasn’t even the main villain of that series. I think a completed redemption arc for him here would be good (he has a young daughter now!), but considering Disney Plus shows are watched much less than movies, that’s not great. Kamala Khan does nothing to avoid the massive failure of The Marvels, even though her actress is great in the role.

Post – This is the villain of the film, which went from Oscar nominee and Emmy winner Steven Yeun to the far lesser-known Lewis Pullman. And Sentry, in turn, while well-known to comic book fans, is a fairly unknown quantity to general audiences compared to dozens of other Marvel characters.

Once again, I am not to say that Thunderbolts won’t be good. I’m saying that because of everything listed here, it’s going to have a hard time appealing to the general public and I don’t think it’s going to do great. I hope I’m wrong and of course I’m not expecting any Deadpools and Wolverines here, but it’s going to be a tough road ahead.
