Why Shania Twain is a little scared about hosting the PCCAs this year

The People’s Choice Country Awards will air September 26 at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. This year’s show will be hosted by country music icon Shania Twain, and although she’s been a long-time fixture in the industry, she admits she’s a little nervous.

Ahead of Thursday’s big show, we had the opportunity to sit down with Twain and ask her thoughts on what it’s like to host this unique event: Is there anything that scares her?

Shania Twain on hosting the 2024 People’s Choice Country Awards

“Listen, I plan on having a lot of fun,” says the “Man!” I Feel Like a Woman” hitmaker “Taste of Country Nights” Evan Paul. She’s used to appearing at awards shows, but not really as a presenter.

“My responsibility is to host hard-working artists, tip my hat to their talents, and join fans in celebrating the music they love most,” Twain added. “I’m there as a fan.”

Of course she isn’t Only She’s there as a fan – she has a huge responsibility to make sure the show goes on at the right pace and in an entertaining way. This is where her stage fright comes into play, and for good reason.

“I’m not the best reader,” Twain insists. “I am a very spontaneous speaker and thinker. So if I ramble, they might have to take the hook out and take me off the stage.”

“I think it’ll be more about adrenaline than nerves,” she continues, “you know, just being excited and getting ready to meet artists I haven’t met yet.”

Some of the up-and-coming country artists who will be at the 2024 PCCAs would probably never believe that Twain is one of music’s biggest stars always – is just as nervous about meeting them how they should meet her.

“I will say that the night will pass too quickly for me, that the excitement might cause me to talk either too fast or too long,” says Twain, reflecting on how things might go on Thursday night.

“I think I’ll be more like a ditzy child. I think that’s it, I don’t want to talk anymore, you know?”

So when you notice Twain squinting at the camera, just know that she’s trying to keep up with the teleprompter as best she can.

The 2024 People’s Choice Country Awards, hosted by Twain, will air September 26 starting at 8:00 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock (streaming). The show will feature performances from Keith Urban, Lady A, Parker McCollum and more.

Kane Brown will be honored with a special award, the Country Champion Award, as will Miranda Lambert, who will be named this year’s Country Icon. A full list of this year’s nominees can be found here.
