When asked why Vance became a “polarizing, unpredictable conservative,” Howard said in an interview with Deadline that Vance did not talk about politics while filming the movie and focused more on how he survived his childhood.

Howard also said that Vance showed little interest in politics during the filming of the movie:

“So, we didn’t talk about politics much when we were making the film because I was interested in his upbringing and this story of survival. That’s what we focused on mostly. However, based on the conversations we had during that time, I have to say that I’m very surprised and disappointed by the rhetoric that I read and hear. People change, and I suppose that’s the case. Well, it’s on the record. When we talked at the time that I knew him, he wasn’t politically engaged or claimed to be particularly interested.”
