Why an ice cream truck stopped by Alabama’s football practice on Wednesday

As the Alabama football team’s practice ended on Wednesday, a familiar jingle rang out.

This is what children everywhere know. This is what adults have not forgotten, no matter how long ago their childhood was.

The sound of the ice cream truck.

Late Wednesday morning, they pulled up next to the practice field. One jingle after another played as practice ended around noon.

“They’re just rewarding us for working hard out here on the field,” wide receiver Germie Bernard said.

Since it was the first day in full gear, the timing was deliberate. It was the sixth practice of preseason camp in Alabama’s pleasant August heat.

Bernard had already had an ice cream truck visit him during practice. He had a similar experience in Washington when he played for coach Kalen DeBoer in Seattle.

Bernard said DeBoer brought ice cream trucks, food trucks and “all kinds of other trucks” to Washington for training.

“He’s bringing some of it here,” Bernard said.

This is the latest news in a preseason training camp dominated by such players, with DeBoer succeeding Nick Saban, who retired in January.

Count Bernard among the proponents of the post-workout snack.

“Personally, I love ice cream,” Bernard said. “I’ll go out there when I’m done with that and get a little piece.”
