Who will the Tigers face in the playoffs? They will find out on Sunday

The Detroit Tigers are in the playoffs but don’t know their opponent yet.

With Friday’s 4-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox at Comerica Park, the Tigers secured a wild-card berth and secured their first postseason appearance since 2014.

The Tigers (86-75) will find out their opponent on Sunday, the final day of the regular season. Due to the Tigers’ loss to the White Sox on Saturday and the Kansas City Royals’ loss to the Atlanta Braves, the pairings for the American League wild card round have yet to be decided.

The Tigers lead the Royals by one game (85-76) in the race for the second wild card spot, and if Detroit wins its finale against the White Sox or Kansas City loses its final game against the Braves, the Tigers would be the winner of second place Wildcard (No. 5 seed in the AL playoffs) and the Royals would be third (No. 6 seed in the AL playoffs)

Although the Tigers hold a one-game lead over Kansas City entering Sunday’s game, the Royals are in the tiebreaker after winning the season’s straight series. If the teams finish in a draw, the Royals would be the second wild card.

The second wild card team travels to Baltimore to face the Orioles in a best-of-three series starting Tuesday. The third wild card goes to Houston, where they will also face the Astros on Tuesday.

In their direct duels this season, the Tigers were 2:4 against the Astros and 4:2 against the Orioles.

Wildcard scenarios

Tigers win: Detroit faces the Baltimore Orioles in a three-game series (all three games in Baltimore) starting Tuesday.

Tigers and Royals both lose: Detroit plays Baltimore.

Tigers lose and Royals win: Detroit faces the Houston Astros in a three-game series (all three games in Houston) starting Tuesday.
