The last day of summer is fast approaching and we will soon return to summer time.

As temperatures finally cool down a bit, dreams of sweater weather and changing leaves soon become reality. That means our days are getting shorter as we slowly slide into winter and the holiday months. In November, we turn the clocks back an hour to adjust to those winter days.

Daylight saving time begins between March and November, when most Americans set their clocks forward an hour. In March, we set the clocks forward and lose an hour, and in November, we set them back to gain that hour back.

This is where we “fall back.”

When do we fall back?

In 2024, summer time will end on Sunday, November 3at 2 a.m. local time. The day is set back one hour to 1 a.m.

When did daylight saving time start in 2024?

Daylight saving time began on Sunday, March 10 at 2 a.m. local time, when our clocks went forward one hour. However, this twice-yearly time change does not affect all Americans.

Such time changes affect the daily lives of millions of Americans each year. The change can lead to sleep deprivation and changes in the daily routines of children and pets in the days that follow. And it has led to some states trying to ban the practice and two states not following it at all.

Over the years, 19 states have attempted to abolish daylight saving time. However, there are only two states in the United States that do not observe the practice: Hawaii and Arizona.

Five other US territories are also not participating:

  • American Samoa
  • Guam
  • Northern Mariana Islands
  • Puerto Rico
  • US Virgin Islands

When is the last day of summer?

The last day of summer is Saturday, September 21st.

When is the first day of autumn?

The official first day of autumn is Sunday, September 22at 7:44 a.m. CT/8:44 a.m. ET, also known as the autumn equinox.

The equinox is known as the astronomical beginning of a season, but there is another way to measure the change of seasons.

The meteorological start of autumn is based on the annual temperature cycle and the 12-month calendar. According to this definition, each season begins on the first day of a specific month and lasts for three months. This means that summer ends on August 31 and autumn begins on September 1, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac.
