The tax will be introduced from 1 January 2025.

MANITOWOC – The Manitowoc County Board has implemented a 0.5% countywide sales tax, effective January 1, 2025.

Here you will find an overview of what the tax is and what it means for your wallet.

What is sales tax and why does it depend on the federal state?

Wisconsin counties are authorized by the state to impose a 0.5% sales tax on goods and services sold within those counties, but this tax is in addition to the 5% sales tax imposed by the state.

The tax office is responsible for collecting the tax and managing the monthly payments to the districts.

The DOR also retains 1.75% of the taxes collected as an administration fee.

In 2023, Wisconsin counties received $614 million from sales tax distribution, DOR records show. Sheboygan County received $14 million, Fond du Lac County received $11 million and Brown County received $37 million in 2023.

Bob Ziegelbauer, Manitowoc County executive, estimates the sales tax will generate $7 million to $9 million annually.
