What’s on TV this weekend: The Emmys, Three Women

Welcome to the weekend edition of What’s On. Here are the big events on TV from Friday, September 13 through Sunday, September 15. All times are Eastern Time. (Note: The weekly edition of What’s On is published on Sundays.)


1. The buzzing Three women Adaptation is here

Starz, Friday, 10pm: Lisa Taddeo’s acclaimed novel Three women is being turned into a 10-part miniseries on Starz. In the series, Gia (Shailene Woodley) travels across the country to write about the personal stories, desires and bonds of a trio of women: Lisa (Betty Gilpin), a suburban housewife who is having an affair; Sloane (DeWanda Wise), who is in an open marriage; and Maggie (Gabrielle Creevy), who is taking legal action against the high school teacher who abused her. The cast also includes Blair Underwood, Jason Ralph, John Patrick Amedori, Ravi Patel and Lola Kirke. Check out The AV Club‘s review.


2. Natasha Rothwell shines in How to die alone

Hulu, Friday, 12:01 am: Unsure And The White Lotus Natasha Rothwell becomes the leading actress in How to die alonea dramedy she co-created with Vera Santamaria. Here she plays an airport employee, Mel, who is afraid of flying. But after a brush with death, Mel decides that she wants to learn to enjoy life and stand up for herself. Conrad Ricamora, Jocko Sims, Keilyn Durell Jones and Bashir Salahuddin complete the cast. Here is an excerpt from The AV ClubReview by:

The show’s selling point is not its love triangles, its family problems, or even its workplace comedy atmosphere. How to die alone is clearly at its best when it comes to Mel’s quest to break free of her fears so she can finally feel alive. And thankfully, Rothwell brings enough pathos to her performance to make any occasional turbulence worthwhile.


3. The Primetime Emmys are returning

ABC, Sunday, 8pm: Who is ready to celebrate The bear everything again? The 76th Emmy Awards, hosted by Dan and Eugene Levy, honor the best TV stars of the past year. Some of the top nominees are Shogun, The Crown, Abbott Elementary Schooland, oh yes, The morning showthat somehow got the most votes. 4. Ugly imagines a disgustingly superficial world

Netflix, Friday, 03:01 am: Based on Scott Westerfield’s dystopian science fiction novel, Ugly is set in a seemingly perfect future where people can have plastic surgery to become “pretty” from the age of 16. When a friend of Tally’s (Joey King) runs away, she sets out to save her and learns that a revolution is underway against the practice and the government. Also starring: Keith Powers, Chase Stokes, Brianne Tju and Laverne Cox. The AV ClubThe review will be published on Monday.


5. Wynonna Earp is back with a Revenge

Tubi, Friday, 03:01 am: Three years after the entertaining Western horror Wynonna Earp After filming is complete, the film returns as a 90-minute movie. Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) and Doc (Tim Rozon) try to have a happy ending when she is drawn back to her hometown of Purgatory, where a mysterious event has terrified the community. Of course, Earp is the only one who can fix the situation, which probably involves a few demons. Watch for The AV Club‘s opinion on the project later today.


6. Dare to revive 90s fashion

Hulu, Friday, 12:01 am: In Vogue turns the clock back to the 90s to analyze how this decade shaped and changed the fashion industry. In the six episodes of the documentary you can expect commentary from Anna Wintour, Kate Moss, Claire Danes, Jean Paul Gaultier, Marc Jacobs, Naomi Campbell, Nicole Kidman, Sarah Jessica Parker and others.
