Year 2000 celebrated a successful premiere at the SXSW Festival 2024 in March, with a theatrical release on December 6, 2024almost 25 years after the (fictional) events of the film, which takes place on the night of December 31, 1999. With a running time of 93 minutes, the film will bring back nostalgic memories of times when a 3-hour film was absurd, unless you were James Cameron in 1997. This film takes all of these fears and puts them into a Terminator level. At the turn of the millennium, technology not only fails, it also turns against the people who own it.
Two high school best friends, Eli and Danny (Jaeden Martell and Julian Dennison), crash a high school New Year’s Eve party. Eli wants nothing more than to confess his feelings to his long-time flame Laura (Rachel Zegler), and his friend Danny is there to get him excited about it. At first glance, the premise seems similar to Very badtherefore it is no big surprise that one of the Very badLead actor and director of A24s Mid-90s Film, Jonah Hillis a producer on this film. However, when the clock strikes midnight, things take an unexpected turn for the worse. Instead of shutting down, technology rebels against humans and is determined to wipe them off the face of the earth. The group of teens must band together to survive the night and what may come after. This is a wry, comedic revelation about the many positives that advanced technology has to offer… but also the inevitable downsides.
