What we know about Norway’s royal wedding in 2 weeks

In less than two weeks, Norway will experience an extravagant royal wedding: on Saturday, August 31, 2024, Princess Märtha Louise will marry her fiancé Durek Verrett. The three-day celebration will take place at Hotel Union, a historic venue in the Norwegian village of Geiranger. Although the bride and groom announced the date and venue of their wedding back in September, some important details of their big day have since emerged.

While the couple’s ceremony begins on Saturday, they are hosting a multi-day soirée that begins on Thursday, August 29. According to Hello! The first day of the festivities will feature a welcome party in the hotel’s garden, with a “sexy and cool” dress code. The next day, guests will explore the Geirangerfjord by boat and attend a Latin-themed party at the hotel in the evening, according to the release.

The main ceremony, led by parish priest Margit Lovise Holte, and the reception will take place on Saturday. Hello! reported that the dress code for the main event calls for glamorous attire: long ball gowns for the female attendees (any color except white, a strict request of the couple) and tuxedos for the male guests.

While the couple have instructed guests to wear elegant attire, Märtha’s look for the big day remains a secret. Since the bride wore a sleeveless gown by Norwegian designer Wenche Lyche at her first wedding 22 years ago, she will likely wear another ensemble by a local designer at her upcoming nuptials. She also previously wore an hereditary crown, a replica of Queen Maud’s pearl tiara, so she will likely wear a royal tiara to go with her wedding outfit as well.

A large group is expected at this royal soirée. First and foremost, the bride’s family will probably be present. Märtha’s three daughters Maud, Leah and Emma from her first marriage to the late Ari Behn will probably be bridesmaids, so Hello!. The bride’s parents, King Harald and Queen Sonja, are also likely to be on the guest list, along with her brother, Crown Prince Haakon, and his family: his wife, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, and their children, Princess Ingrid and Prince Sverre — as well as Mette-Marit’s child Marius from a previous relationship. The outlet predicts that other royals from around the world will also show up for the event.
