What to watch this weekend, August 9, 2024: Film awards contenders

Matt Damon And Casey Affleck have both won Oscars for films set in Massachusetts; Damon for writing “Good Will Hunting” with Casey’s brother Ben and Casey for acting in the tragic drama “Manchester by the Sea”. Damon and Affleck’s latest team-up set in Boston, the heist comedy “The instigators,” probably won’t win them any more gold, but it’s still an entertaining outing. (Casey stars in and co-writes the film, and Ben is a producer, from Matt and Ben’s production company, Artists Equity.)

Damon – reunites with his “Bourne Identity” director Doug Liman — plays Rory, a financially struggling middle-aged man who decides to try his hand at robbery. He teams up with Cobby (Affleck, who wrote the screenplay with Chuck Maclean) to score some points, then brings in his therapist Donna (Oscar nominee) Hong Chau) against her will. How does she feel about it? Not good! The cast also includes heavyweights such as Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul-Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, Alfred MolinaAnd Rob Gronkowski. Yes, this movie is so Boston, Gronk is in it. The Instigators is now streaming on Apple TV+.

Here are some other movies you can stream this weekend:

The Bikers”: Screenwriter and director Jeff Nichols“The crime drama set in the 1960s is now streaming on Peacock after a moderately successful theatrical release.” Austin Butler And Jodie Comer play a couple who are members of a biker gang led by Johnny (Tom Hardy), and the film traces the rise and fall of the club. The film didn’t end up being as award-winning as it had originally hoped, but it could still be an underdog in some categories, most notably Best Actress for Comer.

A life”: This drama based on a true story tells the story of Nicholas Wintona British stockbroker who played a major role in rescuing mainly Jewish refugee children from Czechoslovakia in 1938 in the run-up to World War II. He was an ordinary man who did something extraordinary. He played a major role in 1938 in Johnny Flynn and in 1988 by Oscar winner Anthony Hopkinsreflects on his life and worries about what has become of the people he helped. The film is another one that is unlikely to compete for major awards, but it has a star-studded cast that includes Helena Bonham-Carter, Lena OlinAnd Jonathan Pryce“One Life” is streaming on Paramount+.

Despicable Me 4”: The third most successful film of the year is now on VOD. The fourth part of the “Despicable Me” series (without the “Minions” spin-offs) follows Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) while trying to protect his family from his old rival Maxime Le Mal (voiced by Will Ferrell), who wants to turn Gru’s son into a cockroach. The film isn’t an Oscar contender, but if you buy it on demand for your kids, you could be nominated for Parent of the Year.
