Over the past two seasons, the Westinghouse football program has proven to be a dominant force, not only in the City League, but throughout the state.

The Bulldogs have a combined record of 27-2 in 2022 and 2023, with both losses coming in the PIAA Class 2A championship game against Southern Columbia.

Westinghouse will play its first home game of 2024 on Thursday and hopes to avoid the same loss total in the first two weeks as it has in the last two years.

Veteran quarterback Khalil Green threw for 139 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 50 yards, but the Bulldogs lost their season opener in Week 0 28-26 to Beaver.

At Cupples Stadium on the south side, Westinghouse opens the high school football week schedule with a game against the Linsly School from Wheeling, West Virginia.

This will be the season opener for the cadets.

Last year, Linsly defeated Trinity 27-3 in a Week 7 game.

Not so little

One team worth watching in the early stages of the 2024 WPIAL boys soccer season could be Indiana.

Last season, the Little Indians won only six games and finished 6-11-1 overall, but finished fourth in Section 1-3A and qualified for the playoffs.

There, Indiana surprised Section 3-3A champion Bethel Park in the first round before losing 2-1 to Montour in the 3A quarterfinals.

Indiana is off to a 3-0 start this season, including a 5-0 win over Obama Academy in its section opener on Tuesday.

On Thursday, the Little Indians will visit a Knoch team that is still waiting for its first win.

The other two teams that secured early first place in Section 1-3A with a tie for first place with Indiana are Armstrong and Shaler.

The River Hawks visit the Titans on Thursday.

Successes by the dozen

In the early stages of the boys’ soccer teams of Section 2-2A, the score is 1-0 after victories in the opening games of the section on Tuesday.

All four will compete against each other on Thursday.

Two of the four teams secured convincing victories on Tuesday in the game, which also marked their season opener.

Avonworth defeated Riverside 12-0, while Keystone Oaks passed Ellwood City by the same score (12-0).

Thursday’s first-place games will be a little tougher for the Antelopes and Golden Eagles.

Avonworth hosts Quaker Valley (1-2) in a matchup of last year’s Section 4-2A co-champions, while Keystone Oaks visits Central Valley (3-0).
