What time is the closing ceremony of the gold medal game in women’s basketball

On Sunday, Kahleah Copper of North Philly and the U.S. women’s basketball team will end the spectacular Olympic Games with the prospect of the eighth consecutive gold medal for the U.S. women’s basketball team.

The USA will play host France at 9:30 a.m. Philadelphia time, live on NBC, Telemundo (in Spanish) and streamed on Peacock. Breanna Stewart, A’ja Wilson and Co. are considered clear favorites, but WNBA veterans Gabby Williams and Marine Johannès surprisingly led Germany and Belgium to the final.

There are still eleven gold medals up for grabs on Sunday, and the USA will be in the spotlight in three of them: women’s basketball, women’s volleyball and women’s wrestling.

The volleyball team will face Italy at 7 a.m. This will be the first broadcast of the day on NBC. Wrestling hopes rest on Kennedy Blades, a Chicago native, who will face Japan’s Yuka Kagami in the finals in the 76-kilogram (167-pound) division. The whole thing will be broadcast live on Peacock. The wrestling schedule starts at 5 a.m. and that is the last match, so it’s not yet clear when it will take place, but it will probably be early in the morning.

All of this is not just important for its own sake, and there is of course plenty of that. It is also important for a specific reason, namely in terms of the medal table. While the US media likes to rank countries by the total number of medals won, the rest of the world ranks countries first by the number of gold medals won – and likes to make fun of the USA for it.

At the end of Saturday’s competition, China had 39 gold medals and the USA had 38. The USA has won gold at the last three Olympic Games, and this time it could be exciting again.

China’s Li Wenwen has a good chance of winning gold in the women’s 81-kilogram weightlifting class. She is a two-time world champion and reigning Olympic champion at this level. Since the women’s basketball match is the last event, this could be the deciding factor for the placing.

The closing ceremony begins at 3 p.m. It will take place at the Stade de France, the national stadium that hosted rugby and track this summer. NBC will broadcast the event live. Mike Tirico will host the event along with Jimmy Fallon, Terry Gannon, Tara Lipinski and Coatesville native Johnny Weir.

Swimming star Katie Ledecky and Chester County native Nick Mead, who helped the U.S. win its first gold medal in the four-man bobsled since 1960, will be the American flag bearers. Snoop Dogg, who has been everywhere with NBC this summer, will attend the handover ceremony, which sets the stage for Los Angeles in 2028.

Thank you to everyone who followed our coverage and took advantage of our schedules every day of the Games. This is always one of the most popular activities during the Olympic Games, whether it is summer or winter, and we appreciate your support.
