What Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” is really about

With more than ten weeks at the top of the charts, Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” could be the breakout hit of the year. In just under three minutes, the guitar track manages to transport listeners to a local pub, where they sip something strong alongside the artist. Here is the story behind the song:

“A Bar Song (Tipsy)” began with a 2004 hit

Here’s how to watch

The People’s Choice Country Awards will return on Thursday, September 26, 2024 at 8/7c. Watch the 2023 ceremony on NBC and Peacock.

Twenty years before “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” hit the airwaves, rapper J-Kwon released his song “Tipsy,” an ode to the hustle and bustle of the club. Shaboozey’s song interpolates J-Kwon’s, but rather than being about having fun in the club, his song is more about washing away your worries at a bar, with lines like “This 9 to 5 ain’ “T workin’, why the hell.” Am I working that hard? Yes, it’s about a party, but it’s also about blowing off steam after a long day.

“I’ve been wanting to do a flip of a song from the 2000s for a while,” Shaboozey said billboard. “I was like, ‘Everyone at the bar is getting tipsy,’ and then we were like, ‘Oh, shit!’ The producer picked up the guitar and started playing the chords, and then we started writing, just having fun and being creative.” (The main opening lyric in J-Kwon’s song is, “Everyone in the club is getting tipsy.”)

“We love incorporating gang vocals and all our friends singing,” he revealed Rolling Stone. “I think the more energy and the more people you put on a song, the more noticeable it becomes, and I add that the recording session “definitely turned into a party by the end of the song, which is a good sign. “
