Why Paramount TV Studios is closing

The Paramount logo

Paramount TV Studios is closing primarily because its parent company, National Amusements, was acquired by another media company: Skydance Studios (via The Hollywood Reporter). Paramount Global will then merge with Skydance, primarily because Paramount Global has $14.6 billion in long-term debt that Skydance plans to help pay down by investing in the company (via The Washington Post). After the merger is complete, Paramount Global will continue to operate with Skydance as one of its studios, but without Paramount TV Studios.

Shari Redstone owned a majority stake in National Amusements, the parent company of Paramount Global. Redstone sold that stake to Skydance, and when the deal closes, Skydance will own other media companies in addition to Paramount, including CBS, Nickelodeon, MTV and Comedy Central.

To facilitate the merger of Paramount Global and Skydance, Paramount Global wanted to save $500 million in costs. To save that money, Paramount Global took measures including laying off 15% of its employees (via The Hollywood Reporter). Now In order to achieve the goal of cost savings of $500 million, Paramount TV was also closed. (via Variety). Nicole Clemens, president of Paramount TV Studios, said in a memo that the closure “is not a decision based on the performance of PTVS. This step is the result of significant changes in the TV and streaming market and the need to streamline our business,” (via The Hollywood Reporter)

How will the closure of Paramount TV affect season 3 of Reacher?

With news of the closure of Paramount Television Studios still fresh, it’s difficult to predict with any certainty what will happen to the company’s various shows. However, the future of Gripper Season 3 remains safe. Gripper Season 3 was confirmed even before the release of Season 2 and the series has already broken streaming records for Amazon Prime Video. A shutdown this big is a big change behind the scenes, and there are bound to be some issues when CBS Studios takes control. These issues could lead to production delays for Gripper. It is also not clear what exactly will happen to Paramount TV employees, which means Gripper could experience a change in his creative vision in the future. Basically, it is still too early to say exactly how the closure of Paramount TV will affect Gripper.

As for other TV shows, Grippertheir potential fate is probably more uncertain. Paramount Global is clearly keen to cut costs ahead of the merger, and less successful shows may be deemed too expensive to continue. Paramount TV also had a fair number of projects in development, and CBS Studios may not be big enough to continue with all the shows both studios had in development. Even if they are not canceled outright, some shows may experience delays due to the merger and behind-the-scenes restructuring.
