WestJet is working to get 16 aircraft back in service after hailstorm

WestJet is still feeling the effects of the storm that hit the Calgary-based airline’s hub on August 5, and more than 10% of its fleet continues to undergo inspections and repairs.

WestJet airline president and WestJet Group chief operating officer Diederik Pen expressed disappointment that the “exacerbated impact of last week’s hailstorm” continues to impact passengers’ travel plans and expressed frustration with the “unpredictable nature of the summer travel season.”

However, he added that dedicated technical operations teams (who have travelled from across the airline’s network) are “working around the clock to get (WestJet’s) fleet back to full capacity.” However, cancellations remain inevitable, with the airline currently cancelling an average of 50 flights per day.

In addition to its “proactive cancellations,” WestJet is also “actively pursuing all options, including adding additional flights operated by WestJet Encore and its partner Canadian North” to reduce the number of cancellations. The company has also engaged Boeing and the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) to secure additional resources and expedite aircraft repairs.
