Western North Carolina updates death toll as recovery from Hurricane Helene continues to progress

As Western North Carolina continues to recover from Hurricane Helene, which struck on September 26, counties across the state are updating their death tolls as recovery efforts continue.

TheN.C. The Joint Information Center shared the latest information with News 13 as of September 30 at 9 a.m. Total numbers and information per county are listed below:

Buncombe County

40 confirmed storm-related deaths. Officials did not provide any information about who they were or what area they were found in.

Catawba County

A 4-year-old girl was passing by on Sept. 26 when the vehicle she was riding in was involved in a two-vehicle collision on a closed, flooded road.

Cleveland County

A woman of unconfirmed age died on September 27 after being hit by a falling tree while out for a walk.

A 72-year-old man also died on September 27 after being hit by a falling tree.

Haywood County

Four confirmed storm-related deaths. Officials did not provide any information about who they were or what area they were found in.

Henderson County

Five confirmed storm-related deaths. Officials did not provide any information about who they were or in which area they were found

Macon County

One confirmed storm-related death. Macon County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jim Lau reportedly died after his truck became submerged.

Madison County

On September 27, a 37-year-old woman died while evacuating her home due to rising floodwaters, and her car was swept away by the floods a short distance from her home.

Rutherford County

A 40-year-old man died on September 27 after a tree fell on his home.

Transylvania District

No storm-related deaths were reported and there were no reports of missing persons.

Yadkin County

A 57-year-old man was passing by on September 27 when the vehicle he was driving was struck by a large tree that fell onto the roadway on the opposite side of the road.

News 13 is working to obtain more information about these fatalities and other deaths that are currently unreported.
