Weekend Watch Guide: An Oklahoma State fan’s guide to Week 5 of the college football season

The first four weeks of the college football season have been wild, but Week 5 offers some teams an opportunity to take a step forward as contenders for their conferences and spots in the College Football Playoff.

Here’s a look at the Big 12’s schedule for the weekend, as well as some games with a lot on the line across the country (or at least involving teams from Oklahoma State).

Big 12 schedule

No. 20 Oklahoma State (3-1) and No. 23 Kansas State (3-1) – Saturday, 11 a.m. on ESPN
No. 22 BYU (4-0) at Baylor (2-2) – Saturday, 11 a.m. on FS1
TCU (2-2) at Kansas (1-3) – Saturday, 2:30 p.m. on ESPN+
Colorado (3-1) at UCF (3-0) – Saturday, 2:30 p.m. on FOX
No. 18 Iowa State (3-0) at Houston (1-3) – Saturday, 6 p.m. on FS1
Cincinnati (3-1) at Texas Tech (3-1) – Saturday, 7 p.m. on ESPN2
Arizona (2-1) at No. 10 Utah (4-0) – Saturday, 9:15 p.m. on ESPN

The Cowboys’ trip to Manhattan appears to be the game of the week in the conference, but several other programs have a chance to establish themselves as Big 12 title contenders on Saturday.

BYU, for example, is still undefeated after defeating K-State last weekend. The Cougars also beat an SMU team that beat TCU last week. BYU is facing a difficult period, so taking care of business in Waco is of the utmost importance.

Colorado and UCF could both be title contenders. UCF leads the league in offense with an average of 45.7 points per game, while Colorado has played big game after big game up to this point and still boasts a 3-1 record.

Cincy and Tech have evened their records with a win each time they started conference play. The winner of this game could be a dark horse if chaos continues.

Selection on Saturday

No. 15 Louisville (3-0) at No. 16 Notre Dame (3-1) – Saturday, 2:30 p.m. on Peacock
No. 21 Oklahoma (3-1) at Auburn (2-2) – Saturday, 2:30 p.m. on ABC
Arkansas (3-1) at No. 24 Texas A&M (3-1) – Saturday, 2:30 p.m. on ESPN
Fresno State (3-1) at UNLV (3-0) – Saturday, 2:30 p.m. on FS1
North Carolina (3-1) at Duke (4-0) – Saturday, 3 p.m. on ESPN2
No. 3 Ohio State (3-0) vs. Michigan State (3-1) – Saturday, 6 p.m. on Peacock
Tulsa (2-2) at North Texas (3-1) – Saturday, 6 p.m. on ESPN+
No. 2 Georgia (3-0) vs. No. 4 Alabama (3-0) – Saturday, 6:30 p.m. on ABC
Washington State (4-0) at No. 25 Boise State (2-1) – Saturday, 9 p.m. on FS1

With the Fighting Irish still coming off a loss to Northern Illinois and no potential conference championship to save them, they are skating on thin ice when it comes to a possible College Football Playoff berth. Louisville, meanwhile, could be an ACC contender, especially given Florida State’s struggles.

After the loss in Stillwater, Arkansas has rattled off consecutive wins on the year to move to 3-1. Texas A&M is also 3-1, having won three straight following a season-opening loss to Notre Dame.

The UNLV situation is…well…wild? The Rebels are 3-0 and a leading candidate for a spot in the Group of Five playoffs, but quarterback Matt Sluka left the team this week due to no-fault issues. Does this mean the end of the rebels’ hopes or can they still carry on?

Georgia and Alabama is the national game of the week. The higher-ranked team, Georgia, is coming off a 13-12 victory at Kentucky, while Alabama has outscored its first three opponents of the season by a combined score of 147-26.

Boise State is another team after the Group of Five has made a playoff bid. The Broncos’ only loss was the road loss to Oregon. Boise State will get a chance at another resume booster as Washington State is undefeated (including wins against Texas Tech and Washington).
