A tornado warning is not considered as serious as a warning that has not been issued for the area.

Rather, an observation indicates that conditions are favorable for a particular weather event in or near an area, while a warning means that a particular weather event is occurring.

A total of 26 counties in New York State are affected by the warning. A wind warning also applies to areas in the Lower Hudson Valley until 11 p.m.

A tornado warning was issued for Orange County at 4:35 p.m. The warning was set to expire at 5:00 p.m.

According to a NWS summary, one tornado was confirmed in Montgomery, Orange County in 2020.

The Journal News/lohud.com reported on tornadoes in May 2018. The NWS concluded at the time that two tornadoes touched down in the towns of Kent and Patterson in Putnam County and that wind speeds may have been as high as 110 mph (177 km/h).
