Weather in Seattle: Smoke moves east, then cooler weather

After smoky weather over the weekend, cleaner air and cooler weather are returning to Seattle and Western Washington this week.

This morning, many locations in Western Washington experienced low clouds and scattered patches of fog. Although there is some smoke near the ground, most of the wildfire haze is in the upper levels of the atmosphere, meaning that air quality at ground level has not significantly decreased.

However, for people who are sensitive to smoke (e.g. asthmatics, COPD, COVID-19, etc.), air quality near the Cascades and in Eastern Washington may be “moderate” to “unhealthy.” On the coast, air quality should remain “good.” Many backyards near Puget Sound are now measuring “good” to “moderate” levels.

Here are resources to help you check air quality in our area:

The Washington Air Quality Map and the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency are resources for checking air quality in our region.

When cooler, cleaner air arrives from the Pacific on Monday, the remaining haze will be pushed out of Western Washington and into the eastern part of the state. For now, it looks like air quality will be mostly good this week. Stay tuned, because that can change!

Highs will reach 70 degrees this afternoon in most areas of Puget Sound, but the smoke may hinder the rise in temperatures a bit. Temperatures will be super comfortable for the Seahawks game!

There is a slight chance of isolated showers or thunderstorms over the Cascades today, but the chances are greatest east of the crest of the Cascade Range.

On Monday and Tuesday, predominantly cloudy weather is expected.

Isolated rain showers cannot be ruled out on Wednesday.

Thursday promises wonderful weather with partly sunny skies and maximum temperatures of almost 21 degrees.

It will remain cloudy on Friday and Saturday, but the sun will shine again in the afternoon.
