Weather and storms could postpone game in Atlanta

play

Rain and thunderstorms in the Atlanta area have cast doubt on the outcome of the final two games of the series between the Mets and the Braves at Truist Park.

With rain falling in Georgia and Hurricane Helene heading toward the Southeast in the next few days, Major League Baseball is reportedly planning to play the second game of the series at 7:20 p.m. on Wednesday.

What is the weather forecast for Atlanta?

According to Accuweather, the chance of rain at game time is 82 percent, and at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. it is less than 50 percent.

What is the path of Hurricane Helene?

The aftermath of Hurricane Helene is expected to hit the Atlanta area between Thursday and Friday, further complicating the situation for Thursday’s series finale.

Where do the Mets stand in the NL wildcard race?

The Mets go into the second game of the series with a one-game lead over the Braves, who are half a game behind the Diamondbacks and can thus secure the last wild card spot in the National League. On Wednesday, Mets left-hander David Peterson (9-3, 3.08) is scheduled to face NL Cy Young favorite Chris Sale (18-3, 2.38) of the Braves.

Since the NL Wild Card Playoffs begin on Tuesday, October 1, the only possible rain-out date for a make-up would be Monday, September 30. If the results of the postponed games are needed for playoff placement, they could be made up that day.

After Atlanta, the Mets will travel to Milwaukee for their final three games of the season, where they will face the NL Central champion Brewers. The Braves will stay at home for a three-game series against the Royals.

After completing a series with the Giants on Wednesday, the Diamondbacks will host the Padres for three games starting Friday. Weather-related postponements are not possible on the covered playing field at Chase Field.
