We celebrate the future of public service

As bright as the summer sun shines, so too is the potential of the next generation of civil servants. This year, GSA welcomed new talent from diverse backgrounds through the Pathways internship program, reinforcing GSA’s commitment to being one of the best places to work in government.

The Pathways program offers students and recent graduates more than just a temporary position; it is a gateway to understanding the important role of public service in our society. Many of GSA’s former interns have moved on to full-time positions, bringing continuity and long-term value to our teams.

“We are excited about what the future holds for our interns, and I hope that includes their return to GSA,” said Katy Kale, GSA deputy commissioner. “It’s great to see the next generation choosing a career in public service, with guidance and support from mentors and teams, and bringing their own talents to the table.”

Through the stories of four GSA interns, we gain insight into the diverse experiences, challenges and goals that have shaped their careers at GSA.

Elly Mejia Castro, a law student at George Washington University (Washington, DC), said her love of public service stems from growing up as a first-generation American whose parents came from a country where opportunities weren’t many. “As a child, I would often visit her birthplace and understood early on how lucky I was to be born and raised in the United States,” she said. “For me, it’s about giving back to a country that has given me so much. This internship has only increased my interest and desire to work for the government.”

She added, “GSA is very people-oriented. I feel like I’m part of a team, even when I’m working virtually. And the agency does a great job of preparing employees for telework: They provide computers, phones and all the technology and equipment you need to be successful, which is rare.”

Elly said that the great thing about GSA is that there is never a dull moment. “There are a variety of topics to explore and you get the chance to work with people who are learning things you find fascinating too!”

For Andrew McElwain, a rising senior at the University of Mary Washington (Fredericksburg, Virginia) who grew up with military parents, working for the government was a no-brainer.

“Public service means giving back to the community and serving the people of your country,” he said. “I believe it is a duty to give back to home. This is my home, and I want to give back to it. Interning at GSA is rewarding because I know I’m making a real impact on Americans’ lives every day.”

Advice for students interested in an internship at GSA: “Just do it. Try an area that interests you, and if you don’t enjoy it, try something new because the GSA has everything you can imagine.”

Felix Raimondo, Legal Department

Felix Raimondo, a third-year law student at Arizona State University (Phoenix, Arizona), chose GSA because he was interested in public service and wanted to gain experience in the federal government. “Plus, the people here are fantastic,” he added.

“I’ve met so many amazing people whose paths have crossed with GSA or made this their career. It’s so cool to hear how they approached their careers and reflected on difficult decisions.”

Advice for students interested in an internship at GSA: “First, check USAJobs – set up an email alert for job postings. Second, make sure your USAJobs application is as good as it can be. Third, be yourself in the interview – share your interests or goals related to your career and life and the steps you have taken to achieve them.”

DeeAnn Scott, Public Buildings Service

DeeAnn Scott, a third-year student at Rowan University (Glassboro, New Jersey), agrees with Raimondo: “What I love most here is the environment, the people. Being surrounded by such wealthy professionals motivates me to work harder and grow professionally. My supervisor, Dyeshia Sampson, is amazing and helped me a lot with this internship. She is truly my role model right now.”

DeeAnn, who grew up in suburban New Jersey, said she is learning not only job knowledge but also logistical skills for life. “It was my first time taking the subway into the city! It helped me learn faster and sharpen my time management skills.” For Scott, public service means everything. “It’s a badge of honor to be able to serve the U.S. government and see our country run smoothly. This country is a true blessing and I’m just happy to be able to do my part and help support society. GSA is truly the place to be!”

Advice for students interested in an internship at GSA: “Always aim higher than what is expected of you. And always make sure you make an impression. Be kind, punctual, professional and exceed expectations in everything you do.”

All of our interns agree on one thing: this summer internship at GSA is an invaluable milestone in their career path. Having so many inspired, skilled professionals with passion for different fields underscores the importance of young talent in government. That’s exactly what GSA wants to attract – people who are eager to learn, contribute, and make a difference for the American people.
