Ways and Means tax teams are still on the road in August – Ways and Means

Washington, DC. – Republican Budget Committee tax teams have been busy meeting directly with hardworking Americans during the August recess. To date, the teams have held over sixty events to assess the impact of the 2017 Trump tax cuts and discuss legislative solutions to protect working families, farmers, small businesses and manufacturers from the $7 trillion tax increase proposed by Biden and Harris.

Main Street

Earlier this month, Main Street Tax Team Chair Rep. Lloyd Smucker (PA-11) hosted a roundtable in York County, Pennsylvania, with Rep. Mike Kelly (PA-16) and local small business owners to discuss how federal tax policies included in the landmark Trump tax cuts put small businesses on par with larger companies. Tax Team leaders also heard from small business owners about how important these provisions, including the 20 percent small business tax deduction (Section 199A), are to their survival. Before the roundtable, Reps. Smucker and Kelly visited small businesses in Shrewsbury and New Freedom to speak directly with business owners and employees.

Global competitiveness

Global Competitiveness Tax Team Chair Rep. Kevin Hern (OK-01) hosted Ways and Means Committee Chair Jason Smith (MO-08) and Reps. Ron Estes (KS-04), Blake Moore (UT-01), and Randy Feenstra (IA-04) for a roundtable discussion in Atlanta, GA to discuss tax policies that will enable American businesses to thrive, create jobs, and compete on a global scale. While Democrats in Washington continue to argue for a higher tax on workers and job creators than in Communist China, Republicans on the Ways and Means Committee are determined to enact a tax bill that will continue to keep America as the best place to grow, hire, and expand. Tax Team members point out that corporate transformations in the U.S. stalled after passage of the 2017 Trump tax cuts.

Rural America

Rural America Tax Team Chair Rep. Adrian Smith (NE-03) joined Reps. Randy Feenstra (R-IA) and Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) on a trip through Nebraska and Iowa to hear from manufacturers, agriculture stakeholders, farmers and energy producers about how the 2017 tax cuts have been a boon for job creation, food production and domestic investment. The trip also included a roundtable with local financial leaders to discuss the positive impact of the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit on housing access in rural communities.

Supply chains

Following a Budget Committee hearing at the Iowa State Fair, Rep. Randy Feenstra (IA-04), co-chair of the Supply Chains Tax Team, along with Reps. LaHood (R-IL) and Ron Estes (KS-04) and Rep. Ashley Hinson (IA-02) visited MidAmerican Energy at their wind turbine at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. The tax team discussed Iowa’s importance as an energy supplier in the Midwest and the energy tax policies that will emerge in 2025.

Community development

Earlier this month, Rep. Mike Carey (OH-15), a member of the Community Development Tax Team, toured an apartment complex in Columbus, Ohio that houses seniors over the age of 55. Following the creation of Opportunity Zones as part of the 2017 Trump tax cuts, the apartment complex underwent millions of dollars of renovations, made possible only through the economic development tool. Rep. Carey heard directly from residents how the renovation, which included a new roof, HVAC systems, and electrical and plumbing improvements, dramatically improved residents’ lives.
