Vice President Kamala Harris responded to former President Donald Trump’s comments about her identity as a black woman: “It’s a tragedy that we have someone who wants to be president when he has, over and over again throughout his career, tried to divide the American people over the issue of race.”

Harris then referred to incidents from Trump’s past. For example, as a landowner, he refused to rent property to black families, called for the execution of the Central Park Five in a full-page ad in the New York Times, and spread “birther lies about the first black president of the United States.”

She also expressed that the “overwhelming majority” of Americans do not support dividing the country based on race and instead view each other as “neighbors.”

“We don’t want a president who is constantly trying to get Americans to point fingers at each other,” Harris said. “I meet people all the time who ask me, ‘Can we please just talk about how we invest in the aspirations, ambitions and dreams of the American people?’ We know that no matter the color of people’s skin or the language their grandmother speaks, we all have the same dreams and aspirations and we want a president who invests in those people, not in hatred and division.”

Harris and Trump met on Sept. 10 for their first and possibly only debate, hosted by ABC in Philadelphia. Harris replaced President Joe Biden as the Democratic presidential nominee this summer after Biden’s troubling performance at the debate in June, fueling calls for him to drop out of the race.

According to the latest PBS News/NPR/Marist poll, more than two-thirds of Americans say they will watch all or most of the debate. While many voters have already made up their minds, 14 percent of Americans say the debate will have a major impact on which candidate they vote for.
