A lot happened this past week: Charli Plenty of material for SNL to work with during the premiere of its 50th season. Notably, Bowen Yang put on his best Essex act to portray Charli XCX and donned a hippopotamus costume to give a familiar-sounding glimpse into Moo Deng’s viral fame.

In “Weekend Update,” Yang played the hippopotamus Moo Deng, who delivered a monologue to his millions of new fans about setting boundaries: “Reminder: Women don’t owe you anything. When I’m in my enclosure, tripping over things, or biting my trainer’s knee, I’m at work. This is the project.” She also made it clear that she will not support any candidate for the 2024 presidential election. Wait… that’s what I heard. Yang also interviewed Roan for interview last month.

As Charli, Yang hosted a political talk show called Talk Talk Show with DJ Troye Sivan, played by Sarah Sherman. (You may remember that Timothée Chalamet and Boygenius played Sivan on the show last fall.) “Charli” chatted and gave guests Susanne Bartsch (Jean Smart), Kaitlan Collins (Chloe Fineman) and Jasmine Crockett (Ego Nwodim). a brief overview of what is brat or nat.

And speaking of the election, at the cold start of the episode, Maya Rudolph repeated her Kamala Harris impression at a campaign rally in the swing state of Wisconsin. She brought her Vice President Tim Walz (Jim Gaffigan), her husband Doug Emhoff (Andy Samberg) and Joe Biden (Dana Carvey). Meanwhile, Donald Trump (James Austin Johnson) and JD Vance’s (Yang) rally didn’t go so well, although “Vance” did quote Radiohead’s “Creep.”

Elsewhere in the episode, Marcello Hernandez played a disillusioned Bad Bunny in a game show sketch, a vaguely Taylor Swift costume was sported in a Spirit Halloween commercial, and she was joined by host Jean Smart Hacks Co-star Hannah Einbinder introduces musical guest Jelly Roll before playing “Liar.” Jelly also introduced the new song “Winning Streak.” Check it all out below.
