Warm start to the week, possible tropical impacts ahead

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – It will be a warm day with temperatures reaching 30 degrees by midday.

Highs will be just over 35 degrees, it will feel like the mid 35s! To put this into perspective, we are usually in the mid 25s at this time of year. Although it will remain dry in many areas, there is a minimal chance of rain in the inland communities in the afternoon.

The weather will remain mostly dry through Tuesday, and a similar forecast is expected for Wednesday as high pressure limits our chance of rain and highs will be between 30 and 35 degrees Celsius. A few showers with sea breezes are possible Wednesday afternoon.

Thursday and Friday are First Alert Weather Days. The end of the work week will be heavily influenced by the strength and position of a tropical system in the Gulf of Mexico that will likely be named Helene.

This system is expected to make landfall on the Gulf Coast of Florida as a hurricane on Thursday. First, I expect tropical moisture bands to spread Thursday into Friday. These moisture bands will bring wind gusts over 30 mph, heavy rains, and the threat of tornadoes. Waves over 4 feet are expected on the coast and the threat of surf rip currents will also increase. Widespread rainfall amounts of 3-4 inches are also expected.

Models suggest the low pressure system will stay west of us, but since it hasn’t even formed yet, that forecast is subject to change. Power outages aren’t the biggest concern right now, but it’s a good idea to plan ahead and go over your hurricane plan with your family.

The forecast for this weekend depends on how quickly this low pressure system moves out of our area. Temperatures are currently above 30 degrees and there is a chance of rain.

Otherwise, we are following a weak low pressure system off the west coast of Africa, which poses no threat to land in the next week.

Stay tuned for updates!
