Walgreens at Central and Eubank will close later this year

The Walgreens location at Central and Eubank in Albuquerque will close later this year, a spokesperson confirmed to KOB.

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – The Walgreens location at Central and Eubank in Albuquerque will close later this year, a spokesperson confirmed to KOB 4.

In a statement to KOB 4, the spokesperson said the company’s current pharmacy model is “unsustainable” and requires a “different approach to the market.” They said closing stores based on profitability is part of it.

“We are making significant changes to our store footprint and closing stores based on profitability, including this Albuquerque store that is unable to cover the cost of rent, staffing and utility needs. While it is not an easy decision to close a store, we will work to minimize disruption to customers,” a spokesperson said.

The spokesperson added that they “intend to redeploy most of their team members.” They plan to offer new roles to “dedicated team members” at other locations.

The store will close on November 6th. This comes nearly a year after Walgreens closed its Central and San Mateo stores in Albuquerque.

In a statement announcing the closure, a spokesperson said patient records would automatically be transferred to the Central and Girard location.

Full statement from Walgreens spokesperson on Central and Eubank location closures:

“Our pharmacy retail business is central to our future business strategy. However, increasing regulatory and reimbursement pressures are impacting our ability to profitably care for our patients. We have reached a point where the current pharmacy model is no longer sustainable and the challenges in our operating environment require us to approach the market differently.

We are making significant changes to our store footprint and closing stores based on profitability, including this Albuquerque store that is unable to cover the cost of rent, staffing and utility needs. While it is not an easy decision to close a store, we will work to minimize disruption to customers. We intend to redeploy the majority of our team members and offer our dedicated team members new roles in other locations.”
