Voters say Kamala Harris is more radical than Trump: “too liberal or progressive”

According to a New York Times poll, more voters say Vice President Kamala Harris is “too liberal or progressive” on key policy issues than they think former President Donald Trump is “too conservative.”

According to a New York Times-Sienna College poll released Sunday, Trump is narrowly ahead of Harris at 48%, while Harris is running at 47%, suggesting that the political support she receives from the DNC after replacing President Biden on the ballot could dwindle in the election’s closing stages.

The data collected in the poll shows that nearly a majority of voters think Trump is “not too far” left or right on key issues. However, only about a third of voters said he is “too conservative,” according to the New York Times poll.

On the other hand, nearly half of voters surveyed (44 percent) said Harris was “too liberal and progressive,” and 42 percent said she was “not far off in one direction or the other.”

The New York Times reported that Trump’s lead over Harris, a more centrist candidate, was one of his “overlooked advantages.”

“Yes, he is outside the political mainstream in many ways – he has denied the outcome of the 2020 election. And yes, he has conservative views on many issues, such as immigration. But he has also taken many positions that a decade ago would have been more likely to be taken by a Democrat than a Republican, such as opposing welfare cuts, supporting a cooperative relationship with Russia or opposing free trade. It’s a reputation he tries to carefully protect, from saying he doesn’t support Project 2025 to his cautious stance on additional measures restricting abortion,” the Times reported.

The poll also found that 11 percent of voters think Trump is “not conservative enough,” compared to 9 percent of voters who think Harris is “not liberal or progressive enough.”

The poll follows one from late July, when Biden dropped out of the race amid growing concerns about his mental abilities, which also had Trump ahead 48-47.

Sunday’s poll also found that 28 percent of voters said they need to know more about Harris to support her, compared with just 9 percent who said the same about Trump.

Late last month, Harris gave her first interview with the media when she joined CNN’s Dana Bash for a joint interview with her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. Otherwise, however, she has largely avoided the media. As of Sunday, Harris has been the presumptive and now official Democratic presidential nominee for 49 days without having held an official press conference.
