Madi Skinner, world traveler

How much fun was it being Madi Skinner?

She started at Kentucky and won the NCAA title alongside her sister Avery in the spring of 2021. Then the now-experienced outside hitter transferred to Texas, which has won two consecutive NCAA titles. In December, she was the MVP in Tampa. And then, well, just think about where she was.

We interviewed her a few days after the NCAA season while she was visiting her sister in Chieri, Italy, where Avery plays professionally. Madi was VolleyballMag’s national player of the year.

We saw her in Paris when we watched Avery at the Olympics and agreed that we would list all of her travels when we got here to Milwaukee.

She was ready.

“I actually have a list,” she said, because Texas sports information director Kevin Rodriguez asked for it.

“That doesn’t include trips to see my boyfriend, because nobody cares about that as much as I do,” said Skinner, who has 137,000 followers on Instagram, so they could. Still…

“Italy, New York City, Brazil, I was briefly in LA, Hungary, Slovenia, Italy, LA, San Francisco, NYC, Washington, DC, Paris, France, Austin, and here we are.”

This of course included Texas’ trip abroad, her time at the USA gym in Anaheim and a trip to the White House.

“I’ve been all over the place, but it’s been really, really fun,” Skinner said.

Records of the first week of the conference

The SEC went 30-11 through the first week. Alabama, Florida, Arkansas and Auburn all went 3-0. The only winless team was Tennessee, which opened with losses to Penn State and Louisville.

Four teams in the Big Ten also made it through with a 3-0 record: Indiana, Michigan, Nebraska and Purdue. Only Wisconsin is winless with a 0-3 record. Overall, the B1G is 31-11.

The ACC, on the other hand, was able to send eight teams into the race with a 3-0 record: Boston College, Cal, Florida State, Miami, North Carolina, Stanford, Syracuse and Virginia. The ACC reached a total of 40-10 last week. No team remained winless.

And the Big 12 has six teams that are 3-0: Arizona, Arizona State, Baylor, BYU, Kansas and Utah. No team has gone winless and the Big 12 is 33-8 overall.
