Volleyball No. 1 beats Wisconsin No. 3 in season opener

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – No. 1 Texas Volleyball opened the season with a big 3-1 win (30-28, 23-25, 25-15 and 25-11) over No. 3 Wisconsin on Sunday at the State Farm Women’s Volleyball Showcase at Fiserv Forum.

The Longhorns (1-0) won the last two sets after a very close first two against the Badgers. Texas served seven aces, had a total of 10.5 blocks and kept Wisconsin in the game with a hit percentage of .153.

Jenna Wenaas achieved a double-double with 18 team-internal kills, 10 digs, two blocks and two aces. Madisen Skinner finished the game with 15 kills, six digs, and three aces (the team’s highest). Reagan Rutherford made her Longhorn debut and finished the game with 14 kills and six digs.

Marianna Singletary was a force in the middle, recording the most hits with a total of eight blocks and nine kills, with a hit percentage of .438.

Emma Holder He recorded a career-high 28 digs and added five assists and a service ace. Keonilei Akana also added nine digs and one assist.

Both Longhorns setters were in the game, with Averi Carlson gave 34 assists with nine digs and Ella Swindle had 12 assists and two blocks.

The first set was a rollercoaster ride as the teams went back and forth throughout the set until the Longhorns finally won 30-28. Skinner led the way with eight kills in the opening set. Texas trailed 22-19 and had to win two set points before fighting back to tie the game at 24-24.

Wisconsin used two 4-0 runs in a very close second set to tie the game with a narrow 25-23 win. The Longhorns held the Badgers to a .150 hitting percentage in the set but could not pull out the win.

Texas won the third set 25-15 to regain the lead. The Longhorns took an early 5-2 lead and never relinquished it. The Badgers narrowed the gap to 16-13, but Texas closed the set with a convincing 9-2 run.

The Longhorns carried the momentum into the fourth set, defeating the Badgers 25-11. Rutherford was outstanding in the final set with five kills and a block. Texas posted a .364 hitting percentage in the fourth set and held Wisconsin to a .028 hitting percentage.

Texas is back in action on Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the State Farm Women’s Volleyball Showcase against Wisconsin
