Virginia Tech thought they had upset No. 7 Miami on the road, but the victory was literally taken out of their hands.

With three seconds left and four points behind, Hokies quarterback Kyron Drones sent the ball streaming into the back of the end zone toward a swarm of Hokies and Hurricanes.

With the naked eye it was difficult to tell who originally had the ball as seven players were jumping on it.

After some scrumming, a Miami defensive back ran off with the pigskin and the celebrations began.

However, the decision on the field was actually a touchdown caught by Da’Quan Felton.

But there was a lengthy review and the officials reversed the decision, giving the Hurricanes a 38-34 victory and leaving the Hokies in complete disbelief.

“It was only half an inch,” Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal said on the ESPN broadcast after the game, admitting his team played “sloppy.”

Virginia Tech got into the game first with a touchdown on their first drive, but the Hurricanes responded by finding the end zone themselves on consecutive drives. However, the Hokies scored 20 unanswered points and took a 27-17 lead early in the third quarter.

Miami scored a touchdown late in the quarter to cut its deficit to three, but Virginia Tech found the end zone again and regained a lead of 10. On the Canes’ next drive, they made it a three-point game again, and then, she forced a threesome.

The Canes marched down the field and capitalized on the drive with a touchdown to take the lead with two minutes left. Virginia Tech obviously had more than enough time, but the evaluation wasn’t on their side.

Miami’s Cam Ward completed 24 of his 38 passes for 343 yards and four touchdowns, with 10 different Hurricanes making at least one reception.

Hokies running back Bhayshul Tuten ran for 141 yards on 19 carries, one of which was a score.

Miami, now 5-0, will visit Cal next week, while Virginia Tech, 2-3, will also fly west for a date with Stanford.
