Virginia Tech player criticizes ACC after reverse walk-off Hail Mary: ‘I want to see consequences’

Virginia Tech had done it. They had pulled off a big upset on the road against the No. 7-ranked Miami Hurricanes with a walk-off “Hail Mary” — or at least they thought they had.

With three seconds left, trailing 38-34, Hokies quarterback Kyron Drones threw a prayer in the back of the end zone to a group of Hokies receivers and Hurricanes defenders.

It was initially unclear who got the ball as both teams stood up in celebration, thinking they had won the game. Eventually, the referees called it a touchdown catch by Da’Quan Felton, giving the Hokies a 40-38 victory as time expired.

However, after a lengthy review, the call was canceled on site. The pass was ruled incomplete and the Hurricanes escaped with a 38-34 victory.

Hokies wide receiver Stephen Gosnell expressed frustration with X’s overturned call following the loss.

“(The) Acc knows what they did. I want to see consequences,” Gosnell wrote.

The ACC released a statement after the game regarding the replay review process for overturning the touchdown call.

“During the review of the final play of the Virginia Tech at Miami game, it was determined that the loose ball was touched by a Miami player while out of bounds, making it an incomplete pass and ending the game immediately,” said the statement said.

Gosnell found himself in the end zone fighting for the ball, which would have been the winning touchdown had the call on the field stood.
