Virginia Tech opens the season on Saturday away at Vanderbilt

BLACKSBURG, Virginia. – The Hokies are under pressure as they prepare to start the 2024 season. After finishing the 2023 season on a high note, expectations are high both within the program and among fans. The team has the right players and is ready to face the challenge of opening the season on the road against an SEC opponent in Vanderbilt.

“It’s always a little different on the road,” said head coach Brent Pry. “You like being at home in your routine and having that extra day. (On the road) everything is faster.”

For the Hokies, the first game is a crucial moment to assess their opponent’s strategy. “You know they may have changed a lot in the first game of the offseason,” said Hokies wide receiver Jaylin Lane. “But at the end of the day, after that first drive, you get a feel for exactly what they’re doing – if it’s different than last year, is it the same?”

Vanderbilt will have a new face at quarterback – Diego Pavia, who transferred from New Mexico State. Hokies linebacker Sam Brumfield, who faced Pavia twice before Tech, knows the challenge he faces. “A damn good athlete, a good quarterback. He’s great at extending plays and he’s really good. He has no problem running the ball and getting extra yards. He’s physical, he’s tough. He’s a really good player,” Brumfield said.

The Hokies’ defensive line, led by Coach JC Price, is well-equipped to put pressure on Pavia. With a mix of experienced players, depth and strong leadership, the unit is set up for success. But as Coach Pry emphasized, execution is key. “Being able to apply pressure and get physical on the defensive line for four quarters… most years when we’ve been able to do that, that’s been a good sign for our defense. It starts up front. We have a group that Coach Price has led, and I’m excited to see them play.”

The Hokies are ready to put their mettle to the test and see if all that offseason preparation pays off when they face Vanderbilt in their season opener at noon on Saturday.
