Virginia Tech Football: Hokies surprisingly sign 4-star WR Snook Peterkin

Fontel Mines, wide receiver coach at Virginia Tech, continues to be successful. On Friday morning, 4-star wide receiver Shamarius “Snook” Peterkin became the latest offensive player to sign with the Hokies.

Peterkin, a 6-foot-2, 175-pound receiver from Mount Tabor High School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, chose the Hokies over North Carolina and NC State. The Wolfpack were considered Peterkin’s frontrunner throughout his recruiting process, but the Hokies kept catching up and Mines won another major recruiting battle.

Here is Peterkin’s commitment from Friday at his high school:

Peterkin is Virginia Tech’s third four-star wide receiver for 2025, joining Micah Matthews and Matthew Outten, both of whom are from Virginia.

Watch Virginia Tech’s response Friday morning:

Gunter Brewer, Virginia Tech’s director of high school relations and lead offensive analyst, assisted Mines in recruiting Peterkin. Brewer has strong recruiting ties throughout the region, especially in North Carolina.

Peterkin, Outten and Matthews will head to Virginia Tech to join another talented group of young receivers, including Brodie Adams, Chanz Wiggins, Ayden Greene, Takye Heath and Chance Fitzgerald. Tech will lose Dae’Quan Felton, Ali Jennings, Jaylin and Stephen Gosnell after the 2024 season.

Tall, long and very fast, Peterkin is a versatile athlete who excels in football and basketball. He is an immediate vertical threat for the Hokies and is also a dynamic punt and kick returner.

Here are some highlights from Peterkin:

It cannot be overstated what a recruiting achievement this is for Virginia Tech. The Hokies now have 16 commitments for 2025, with three receivers and linebacker Brett Clatterbaugh leading the way as four-star recruits.

Welcome home, Snook.
