Virginia Tech 2024 season preview: Cornerbacks and safeties

Is “DBU” back in 2024? First, it’s important to know that Virginia Tech is “DBU,” but others like Florida and LSU have also claimed the mantra in recent years. In case you missed it, the Hokies have a chance to be pretty good in 2024. Tech returns 20 starters this season, including some potential future NFL players in the secondary.

How good can Virginia Tech’s secondary be in 2024? Today, in our final installment of position previews ahead of the new season, we’re highlighting cornerbacks and safeties.

Expected starters

Centre-back: Mansoor Delane

Centre-back: Dorian Strong

SS: Jalen Stroman

FS: Moses Phillips III

Who will play the most?

Delane and Strong form arguably the best cornerback duo in college football. Those living in an SEC bubble may have never heard of the two, meaning they fly under the radar. One could argue that Strong was the best cornerback in the ACC in 2023. Delane has been a star for the Hokies since arriving on campus two years ago. Delane can also play safety if needed. There were concerns that Strong would move on to the NFL and another school would poach Delane after last season, but head coach Brent Pry and Virginia Tech’s strong NIL helped keep the talented duo in Blacksburg.

Back at a safety position is Jalen Stroman. Stroman has been an impactful player since arriving as a freshman in 2021. One of the team’s leaders, Stroman embodies the physical style of play that is a trademark of Virginia Tech football.

At the other safety position is sophomore Mose Phillips. Phillips played as a true freshman last season and coaches raved about him all offseason. Phillips, the son of a coach, has a bright future ahead of him.

The Hokies have some good cornerbacks in depth, led by Dante Lovett and Braylon Johnson. Both played as freshmen last season and could be good starters if the Hokies didn’t have Delane and Strong.

Safety Jaylen Jones began his career as a wide receiver and quickly developed into a good safety. He and freshman Quentin Reddish are VT’s best backup safeties. Reddish is one of the rookies who is generating the most buzz before the season.

outlook

If everyone stays healthy, which is always a big if, this group has a chance to remind Hokie fans of the good old days when interceptions were commonplace. What helps the secondary is the pass rush. The Hokies should have an excellent pass rush, with players like Antwaun Powell-Ryland, Cole Nelson, Aeneas Peebles, Keyshawn Burgos and others providing pressure up front.

Virginia Tech’s 2024 season could be something special, and this secondary gives fans reason to be excited.
