Vintage items, vinyl, tools sought-after at St. Clair Shores citywide garage sale – Macomb Daily
Business was brisk throughout St. Clair Shores on Saturday as the second annual citywide garage sale began, with over 1,000 vendors registered.
The occasional rain didn’t stop shoppers from looking for very specific items, like the young man who asked for CDs at Jenna Thompson’s sale on Frazho Road. Many, like Christy Orr, were simply looking for good deals on whatever caught their eye.
“I’m pretty particular,” said Orr, who had just bought a hardcover copy of The Night Swim by Megan Goldin at a sale on Ursuline Street. “It’s now a TV series and I like to read the book before I watch the movie or the series.”
Thompson is participating in the St. Clair Shores citywide garage sale for the second time because of her great success last year.
“Last year, almost everything was sold out on the first day,” Thompson said as a customer picked up two floor lamps he had just paid for and carried them to his car. “I only had a small table of stuff left for Sunday.
“Business was very good today and I have already sold all my shoes and jeans.”
Thompson said the ability to forgo a garage sale permit and not have to advertise or invest in much signage makes participating in the citywide sale very attractive.
“It just makes it happen because so many people are doing it, you get traffic,” Thompson said. “It’s just a really great idea and it draws people into town, all asking where they can get lunch or what else there is to do at the Shores since they’re here.”
“It’s a great way to promote the city.”
On Maple Street near Little Mack, Kathy Zissis said shoppers were particularly interested in her vintage items – glassware and housewares from the 1960s, such as the vintage metal cake carrier that sits on a table among Christmas decorations and a set of barbecue tools.
A set of colorful M&M tins is one of the more eye-catching features on the side table, which also displays some vintage jewelry.
Zissis participated in the citywide garage sale for the first time this year because her friend participated last year and had great success.
“I have some Detroit Lions merchandise and a lot of unique vintage stuff,” Zissis said, pointing to a small glass-topped table and a folding picnic table with an umbrella. “I think I have a lot of things that people will like that are a little different.”
The St. Clair Shores citywide garage sale continues Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A list of participating homes, broken down by zip code, is available on the St. Clair Shores Cool City Committee Facebook page.
