Vinesh Phogat, who was earlier disqualified from the women’s wrestling -50kg final at the 2024 Paris Olympics for weighing 100 grams more than the permissible weight, has decided to appeal the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. She has asked that she be awarded the Olympic silver. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is an international body established in 1984 to settle disputes in sports through arbitration. Vinesh has requested an urgent hearing and demanded that she be awarded two silver medals. The verdict will be announced on Thursday.

Sarah Ann Hildebrandt of the USA, who was Vinesh’s opponent in the final, was about to face Cuban Yusneylis Guzman Lopez in the final after the Indian was disqualified. Vinesh had beaten Yusneylis Guzman Lopez in the semifinals.

“Let’s see what happens. The Indian delegation has done its due diligence,” Indian squash star Saurav Ghoshal said on Jio Cinema.

Following Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification in the final of the 50kg category at the Paris Olympics, former Indian wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt said it cost India a medal. In a major blow to India’s medal hopes in wrestling, wrestler Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the 50kg women’s wrestling for exceeding the weight limit.

Speaking to ANI, Yogeshwar said it was painful to see her disqualification in the 50kg wrestling category, adding that people should stand behind Vinesh.

“It is a loss of a medal for India and also for Vinesh. The way she was disqualified is painful. It is time to stand by her because she was competing for India. Similar things have happened to international players too. Unfortunately, politics are brought into play. All international wrestlers know the UWW and Olympic rules,” Yogeshwar said.

Vinesh Phogat entered the fight for the gold medal after defeating Cuban Yusneylis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semifinals on Tuesday evening.
