Vice President of grassroots sport, who was removed from the 2028 Olympic Games, speaks out after his successor has already been named

Many former Olympic sports have gained great, but only short-lived, importance at the Games.

We no longer see athletes from all over the world competing in tug of war or solo synchronized swimming, possibly because there is no opportunity for synchronization in solo swimming.

One-handed weightlifting, pistol shooting, cricket, karate and polo are just some of the other disciplines that are no longer part of the Olympic Games.

After a brief but memorable appearance at Paris 2024, breakdancing, officially called breaking, joins these ranks.

This time the sport was new to the Olympics, but when the 2028 Games are held in Los Angeles, there will be no breakdancing.

Breakdancing has entered people’s minds at the Olympic Games, thanks in no small part to Australian dancer Rachael “Raygun” Gunn.

While Canada and Japan took home gold medals at the event, it was the Australians that everyone was talking about.

Sadly, there will be no more raygun at the Olympics as the sport has been scrapped for 2028, and the Australian described the decision as “disappointing” and “perhaps a little premature”.

She said: “Breaking is clearly a sporting discipline, it clearly requires a high level of dedication in many different areas. It really brings a new level of excitement.”

Zack Slusser, vice president of Breaking for Gold USA and USA Dance, told NBC it was a “miracle” that they even made it to the Olympics.

He said: “It was a miracle that we were in Paris at all.

“Being present with the right people who can create real change in our community and on our platform and drive its growth will be of great importance to us. It will enable us to achieve sustainability for the first time and improve our platform.

“It would be great if breakdancing made it to the Olympics again.

“But at the same time, it’s about working together and taking advantage of this opportunity internally.”

So even if breakdancing is no longer part of the Olympics, a lot has been done to raise awareness of the sport and attract new people to it. And perhaps this increased awareness will bring it back to Olympic importance one day in the future.

While some sports are being removed from the Olympic program, several others are new to the program for LA 2028.

Remember we said cricket was one of those former Olympic sports?

It will return in 2028 along with squash, lacrosse, baseball/softball and flag football (the American style of football).
