Veteran honored for special services

JACKSON, Tennessee – A local war hero will be honored in a special service.

Today, World War I veteran George Burney Jr. was honored with a grave marking ceremony.

The special service in Burney’s honor began at 10 a.m. this morning at Mount Olivet Cemetery, 300 East Forest Avenue in Jackson.

Burney was an African American who served in World War I and was awarded several medals before his death in 1919.

At the funeral, Burney’s grave was unmarked. Today’s ceremony is intended to change that.

Burney’s grave was marked at the funeral service, which included a military honor guard tattoo and a 21-gun salute.

During the service, he was also presented with a proclamation from the French government and the city of Jackson.

“His family traveled from several states to recognize and thank their great-great uncle George for his service, and also for his hometown to thank him for his courage, service and the honorable way he represented Jackson, Tennessee,” said Ricky Long, Madison County historian.

Several of Burney’s family members came from all over the United States to attend this special service.
