Vehicles broken into in McGehee Estates, a truck shot at several times

Some homeowners in the McGehee Estates neighborhood woke up Monday morning to find their cars broken into and one vehicle shot multiple times. A woman who heard the shooting at 2 a.m. and called 911 told us police never showed up.

A young mother, who wishes to remain anonymous and lives in the McGhee Estates neighborhood, was rocking her baby at 2 a.m. Monday morning when she heard a disturbing noise.
“I heard two of the loudest gunshots I’ve ever heard, and we hear gunshots every weekend. Nothing new, but these were either in my front yard or across the street. I ran into the hallway with my baby in my arms and screamed my husband’s name, and he heard them too, so he met me in the hallway and said, ‘Everybody hide. I’m going to check outside,'” the homeowner said.
The couple never saw the shooters but called 911 to report the incident.
“I called 911, they answered and asked them to send someone. Then I waited until 4 a.m. and didn’t see an officer,” the homeowner said.

As the sun rose, they saw that their neighbor’s truck across the street had bullet holes and broken glass from gunfire. The truck had also been looted, and it was not the only one. “That night, 14 houses were hit, only seven on my street,” said the homeowner. Bicycles, money and weapons were stolen from cars and yards throughout the neighborhood.

“We knew there were problems with the lack of police officers, but in the last maybe six months, it’s gotten significantly worse. We hear gunshots every night and it’s not a big deal, and there have been several times when I’ve been driving and I’ve seen things happening and I’ve thought, ‘Do I need to protect my baby?’ And I have a small baby. And those are thoughts that I never had until I moved back to Montgomery. And I’m from here and I love Montgomery, but it’s very frustrating to see so little progress being made in terms of bringing in new police officers, encouraging the police officers, or acknowledging that there’s even a problem,” the homeowner said.

Several homeowners said they did not report the break-ins into their cars to police because nothing of significant value was stolen. MPD told us they received three reports of break-ins from Allendale Place. We will hear from more homeowners and have an update on this story later this week.
