Utah State Soccer defeats Texas Tech to improve to 3-0 – Mountain West Conference

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State football (3-0, 0-0 MW) defeated defending Big 12 regular-season champion Texas Tech 2-0 in its home opener Sunday afternoon at Chuck and Gloria Bell Field, improving its record to 3-0 while recording its third consecutive clean sheet to begin the 2024 season.

In her first start as an Aggie, as a freshman forward/midfielder Austin Miller scored the first goal of her college career in the 15th minute to give Utah State an early lead. Miller received a cross from the junior midfielder Kaylie Chambers inside the box before firing a left-footed shot that bounced off the foot of a Red Raiders defender and into the net.

The Aggies scored another goal shortly after, again in the 27th minute. Senior striker Bizzy Arevalo blocked a clearance by a Texas Tech defender that was deflected and flew to the junior striker’s feet Tess Worth at the top of the penalty area. Werts shot with his right foot into the top half of the net to make it 2-0.

“I’m really proud of our team. We’re three games in and we’ve won three games without conceding a goal. Two of the teams we played were NCAA tournament teams last year and this was a Sweet Sixteen team. They threw everything at us and we were able to hold on, so I’m really, really proud.”

  • With the win, Utah State improves its record to 3-0 for the first time since 2013. It is also the first time since 2013 that the team has opened the year with three consecutive shutouts.
  • Utah State has outscored its opponents 9-0 overall this season.
  • Austin Miller started for the first time in her career and played 39 minutes in the competition. Her goal was the first of her career.
  • Tess Werts’ It was her third goal of the season and the seventh of her career.
  • Utah State shot 12 times, Texas Tech 15, but had seven shots on goal compared to six.
  • Ten different USU players took shots, most notably Werts with three, all of which went on goal.
  • Second semester Shay Kercher Pratt In her second career appearance, she was on the field as goalkeeper for the entire 90 minutes and was able to save six shots.
  • Other Aggies who played the full 90 minutes included college-educated defenders Kylie Olsen And Alysia Buttersexperienced defender Addy Weichersand experienced midfielder Kaitlyn Richins.
  • With the win, Utah State is now 4-0 in home openers under Manny Martins and 20-9 overall in home openers with wins in 15 of the last 17.
  • Utah State has now gone over a year without losing at home and is currently on a 10-game unbeaten streak at Bell Field. The last loss came on August 24, 2023.
  • With the win, Utah State improves its overall record against Texas Tech to 2-1.
  • With the win, Utah State is now 10-43-1 overall against current Big 12 schools.

Utah State (3-0, 0-0 MW) will play three straight road games against in-state opponents, starting on Wednesday, August 28, when the team travels to Salt Lake City to face Utah at 7 p.m.

All seating at Chuck and Gloria Bell Field is general admission. Seating in the stadium’s bleachers will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Fans are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for lawn and embankment seating.
