CAPE GIRARDEAU, Missouri – The University of Tennessee at Martin football team went head-to-head with rival Southeast Missouri of the Big South-OVC Football Association in a double-overtime game, but ultimately lost by a final score of 45-42.

The Skyhawks (0-2, 0-1 Big South-OVC) led by two touchdowns in the fourth quarter before the Redhawks fought back in the final minutes – including a home team touchdown with 39 seconds left that forced overtime.

Overtime continued as a game of ups and downs, with the lead changing hands six times. In the first period, SEMO managed an 11-yard pass from Paxton DeLaurent to Mitchell Sellers, who scored his third consecutive touchdown and took an early lead. Then the Skyhawks came alive when a game-ending interception was canceled and a seven-yard jet sweep from Kinkead Dent To Asa Wondeh to tie the game and send it into the second overtime. A 36-yard field goal attempt by the Skyhawks was deflected to the right, opening the door for SEMO, who converted their 37-yard field goal attempt and pulled away with a 45-42 victory.

“Congratulations to SEMO, they made one more play than us tonight,” UT Martin head coach Jason Simpson said. “I’m proud of our guys, we played really, really hard. Sometimes we just didn’t practice as well as we should have or weren’t as disciplined on penalties as we should have. We need to pull ourselves together and win some games. It’s not going to get any easier in the next few weeks. We need to regroup and gain confidence.”
