USC Football loses defensive lineman Bear Alexander to redshirt

When the Notre Dame football team takes on USC on the road on the final weekend of the regular season, the Fighting Irish rival will be without highly touted defensive lineman Bear Alexander.

According to a report from USCFootball.com, Alexander will sit out the rest of the year as he has opted to redshirt.

Alexander played his 2022 freshman season at Georgia before transferring to USC for the 2023 season. He played a total of 25 games over those two seasons and recorded 53 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks (most of which came last year at USC).

Alexander played in USC’s first three games of the 2024 season, including Saturday’s last-second loss to Michigan. However, he only played 21 defensive snaps during the game, which ultimately meant USC couldn’t do enough to stop Michigan’s running game. After the game, Alexander posted on X and seemingly vented some frustration.

According to the report, Alexander worked out on Tuesday before opting to redshirt. The report does not say whether Alexander will enter the transfer portal or stay at USC in the future, but given his history of transferring high schools and colleges, it’s easy to assume his time in the ketchup and mustard colors of USC is over.

College football is becoming increasingly distant from the sport we all grew up with.
